This beautiful Taranaki wetland will be safe forever…with your help

March 23, 2018

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated to our appeal to protect a 133-hectare area of Taranaki wetland forever.

In just a few months, we’ve raised almost $370,000 for the property.

We continue to be blown away by the generosity and commitment of our supporters when it comes to keeping our native forests and wetlands safe.

We still have a little way to go to reach our target of $500,000 but we’re confident that, with your amazing generosity, we’ll get there

The wetland is on the ring plain adjacent to Egmont National Park, approximately 8 km south west of Inglewood between the Waiwhakaiho River and the Kaiauai Stream in north Taranaki.

It is considered a Regionally Significant Wetland and a Key Native Ecosystem by Taranaki Regional Council and a Significant Natural Area by New Plymouth District Council.

Properties that are designated a Significant Natural Area have certain restrictions placed on them that mean that they can’t be cleared, or drained. However, there’s no obligation for the owners to actively protect the area, which means that it can still be devastated by invasive pests and predators.

If this happened, another area of unique habitat would be lost forever, like so many before it.

With nothing to keep them in check, possums strip forests, rats and stoats attack our native birds and forest health declines rapidly. And, with inadequate fencing, stock could wander on and do severe damage as well.

With your support, we can make sure this important area is protected forever.

If you haven’t donated yet, there’s still time to be a part of this incredible campaign. You can help make sure this acutely threatened habitat is protected forever. You can donate quickly, easily and securely on our campaign donation page here: https://www.nfrt.org.nz/appeal/please-help-us-protect-this-rare-taranaki-wetland/
